Marvel, we need to talk about ANT-MAN & THE WASP.

Be honest. Are you excited for ANT-MAN & THE WASP?

Me too. If you aren’t though I guess it is understandable. You may have even forgotten that the ANT-MAN sequel is being released on July 6th, 2018. I think I know why that is.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2? Check.

Spider-Man: Homecoming? From everything I’ve heard. Check.

Thor: Ragnarok? The trailer is fantastic.

Black Panther? The trailer looks amazing.

And then we have what will be the most anticipated superhero film of all time AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

So hey, if you forgot about the ANT-MAN sequel with Marvel continuing to absolutely crush it with their Cinematic Universe, it’s all good. Really. I mean look at everything Marvel has right now that it can promote. Not only promote, but strongly promote because they know they have a great product. I love these films and absolutely can’t wait for the films listed above. Especially INFINITY WAR I mean my hype level couldn’t get any higher…until the trailer drops.

My point.

No longer can we not discuss ANT-MAN & THE WASP when we talk about the upcoming slate for Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Why? Because Peyton Reed dropped this amazing tease for the film on his Twitter to remind everyone that ANT-MAN & THE WASP are here too!

I, personally, LOVED ANT-MAN. I thought it had its own unique voice, had amazing performances from the entire cast, and I absolutely loved Paul Rudd in the title role. He has an uncanny ability to make every character he plays relatable and charming. Scott Lang was no exception. Michael Pena was hilarious, Michael Douglas was so damn good as Hank Pym, and Evangeline Lilly brought such gravitas to Hope Van Dyne. I remember when this movie lost Edgar Wright as the director, tons of people jumped off-board. They thought “Man, this will be the film that ends Marvel’s streak in the MCU.”

But somehow. Someway. The movie delivered the fun, excitement, and heart we all hoped for.

I LOVED this film. It is one of my favorite MCU films. It managed to be fresh and unique while having tremdnous heart throughtout (At it’s core, its a film about fathers and daughters). So when I found out that Paul Rudd would be in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR I was super excited. I was so hyped for Civil War for all the obvious reasons but couldn’t wait to see how Scott Lang/Ant-Man would mix it up with the rest of the amazing cast of the MCU. Then the film came out.

Tom Holland crushed it as Spidey. I mean CRUSHED it. He was so good.

Chadwick Boseman crushed it as Black Panther. He was phenomenal and so bad ass.

Plus, the entire film was amazing and one of the best superhero films ever made.

Even with all of these factors playing in for your attention, Scott Lang still managed to shine in the scenes he was in. The hilarious meet up with Cap, to the action sequences during the airport battle (GIANT-MAN!!!), all the way to the beautifully timed improvised line “Anyone have any orange slices?”

I feel out of all the upcoming MCU films ANT-MAN & THE WASP is the most overlooked. Not for good reason, I mean, have you seen that film slate?! I just feel it once again has the most to prove. With so many amazing films and superheroes on the horizon this is ANT-MAN’S way of saying “Hey, I am still here…and this time… I brought Hope aka the Wasp!”

THAT IS WHAT I AM MOST THRILLED FOR.

No other Marvel film to date has had a film featuring an almost 1-2 punch superhero story. I cannot wait to see how the chemistry Rudd & Lilly showed in the first installment will translate to the new film. I cannot wait to see how Hank Pym will handle himself knowing his baby girl is out there in a dangerous environment and trusting Scott to make sure she stay’s safe, or maybe Hope needs to make sure Scott stays safe! I cannot wait to see that dynamic play out in the new film. I think Lilly is going to be a lot of people’s new favorite superhero when this film comes out. She is an underrated actress (seriously, she is quite brilliant in LOST) and has everything the character of Hope Van Dyne needs! I loved her in ANT-MAN and she didnt’ even get to don the Wasp costume! She is going to kick so much ass, I know it! Peyton Reed be involved from Day 1 and I’m interested to see how he up’s the stakes, keeps the magic of the first one, and find a way to put more of his voice and spin on the material. There is a lot to be excited about if you’re a fan of ANT-MAN and Marvel.

With all of the hype (rightfully) surrounding the entire MCU at the moment it is easy to forget about the underdog of the MCU. That’s why this tweet was so brilliant. That’s why it was important to just remind everyone out there, that hey, we have a pretty damn great film coming out too so don’t forget about us.

So Marvel fans, lets continue to discuss ANT-MAN & THE WASP and make sure the hype level is where it needs to be. Let’s obviously enjoy all of these MCU offerings coming up but let’s not forget about the film that went against all those ups and downs, and proved everyone wrong. Peyton Reed doesn’t want us to forget about his upcoming film.

Mr. Reed.

WE WON’T.

  1. Good post. It does seem that Ant-Man & The Wasp isn’t getting too much buzz right now, but hopefully, that will change in the coming months after Spider-Man and Thor are out and audiences set their gazes to Marvel’s 2018 slate! Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly have great chemistry together, so I’ve got high hopes for the film to kick ass!
